Process Sizing for Small Sewage Treatment Plant

INTRODUCTION

One of the most difficult parts of planning a new sewage treatment facility is that of process sizing. If the equipment or plant is undersized, there can be serious consequences both in terms of potential mechanical problems such as blockages and flooding / overflowing, and loss of treatment performance which could lead to the failure to meet the discharge consents and environmental damage. If the equipment or plant is oversized, this can lead to considerable unnecessary expense.

However, frequently the planners for a new sewage treatment facility do not know how to work out the expected flows and loads, so have to rely on guidance from manufacturers such as ourselves. This can lead to variations in the sizing from different manufacturers, as some are more conservative than others, making it difficult to compare costs and proposals.

This page is designed to allow you, the planner, to calculate the flows and loads for yourself. This should make it easier to submit information to us for costing of our proposals, while also giving you a starting point for comparisons between manufacturers.

Web Requirements

This calculation sheet is a draft and is under development. Currently it uses Visual Basic Scripting, so requires the use of MS Internet Explorer to function (we have only tested on MS IE 6 SP1 to date). It will also require security settings for MS IE will allow unsigned scripts to work.

It is a completely self enclosed page, that simply allows the input of data and performs the relevant calculations. It does not access your file system, email or the internet. It does not gather any information other than that manually inputted, nor does it transmit any information anywhere.

Process Sizing

Start by selecting the category of Person/Premise. Further information will appear so that you can then select the sub-category. Type in the number of people of this type and press the Add to List button. A summary list will appear showing the information entered so far, as well as the combined results. Further additions can be made to the list by repeating the same steps. Unwanted entries can be removed from the list by first selecting the entry to be removed, and pressing the Remove selected from List button.
