Biological Filter Arm Distributors

Tuke and Bell offer a complete range of biological filter distributors for sewage works and water treatment plants. The range is manufactured to standard designs but can be specially adapted to suit individual requirements.

The Process

After the screening, grit extraction and primary settlement of the crude sewage, the effluent is biologically treated to remove contaminants.  Biological filters consist of an environment in which the aerobic treatment bacteria can live and thrive – this often takes the form of filter beds made from stone media.  Biological Filter Distributors are used to spread the effluent evenly over the surface of the filter bed.

Refurbishment and Replacement of Existing Equipment

Tuke & Bell can refurbish and/or replace any other biological filter equipment manufacturer’s equipment into their respective existing tank.

Carlton Distributor
The Tuke & Bell Carlton distributor consists of a static central column with a rotating galvanised steel tank.  Either two or four distributing arms are fitted to the tank and these are supported by vertical wire ropes or solid rods attached to the top bearing head.  The Carlton features a liquid seal arrangement that retains the machine prime without the need for maintenance intensive gland packing.  Motive rotation force is provided by jet reaction from the arms.  The distribution arms can feature EPDM “Pop-In” jets or low maintenance upward flow weir boxes if the machine is to be motorised.

The Carlton distributor can be typically offered to suit filter beds ranging from Ø 5m up to Ø 36m and up to 75 L/s flow rate given suitable hydraulic conditions.  Larger sizes are possible with careful consideration of the machine design.

The Tuke & Bell Carlton Distributor incorporates the following features: –

  • Highly efficient machine intended for use across a wide range of applications.
  • Vertical alignment tuning to ensure precise distribution.
  • 100% maintenance free bearings on 100mm and 150mm bore machines, single bearing grease point on larger units.
  • Liquid Seal retains the machine prime when not under flow conditions.
  • Distribution arms designed to give efficient coverage across filter media.
  • Opening end caps to facilitate easy cleaning of distributor arms.
  • The Carlton distributor can easily be supplied with a Tuke & Bell motorised distributor drive to control machine rotation speeds.

Vulcan Distributor
The Tuke & Bell Vulcan distributor consists of a static central column with a rotating galvanised steel tank.  Either two or four distributing arms are fitted to the tank and these are supported by vertical wire ropes or solid rods attached to the top bearing head.  The Vulcan features a paddlewheel drive system that provides rotational motive force at minimal flow rates.  The distribution arms can either be an open trough with V-notch weir outlets or tubular with low maintenance upward flow weir boxes.

The Vulcan distributor can be typically offered to suit filter beds ranging from Ø 5m up to Ø 25m and up to 25 L/s flow rate given suitable hydraulic conditions.  Larger sizes are possible with careful consideration of the machine design.

The Tuke & Bell Vulcan Distributor incorporates the following features: –

  • Trickle flow rate machine intended for intermittent flows.
  • Vertical alignment tuning to ensure precise distribution.
  • 100% maintenance free bearings on 100mm and 150mm bore machines, single bearing grease point on larger units.
  • Paddlewheel drive provides rotation under minimal flow conditions.
  • Distribution arms designed to give efficient coverage across filter media.
  • Opening end caps to facilitate easy cleaning of distributor arms.
  • The Vulcan distributor is not suitable for motorisation and is best suited for small rural schemes where flow is low and intermittent.
